Czech box office Nov. 20-23: Czech hockey drama ‘Invincibles’ upsets ‘Wicked: For Good’

The sports drama Invincibles, which follows the Czech para ice hockey team leading up to the 2019 World Championships in Ostrava, staged an impressive upset over Wicked: For Good at the Czech box office this weekend. The film, which stars Ivan Trojan, Hynek Čermák, and Tomáš Havlínek alongside German actor Til Schweiger as the coach of the U.S. team, took in CZK 3.90 million to bring its total gross to CZK 4.97 million following last week’s previews.

Global box office smash Wicked: For Good brought in $226 million (CZK 4.7 billion) at the worldwide box office over the weekend, but just CZK 3.53 million of that total came from Czech cinemas, where it debuted in second. That’s right in line with the performance of the first film, which opened to CZK 3.64 million en route to finishing its run with a total just north of CZK 18 million.

Perhaps even more impressive than the top two tallies, however, is the continued strong performance of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the belated third film in the Now You See Me series. The magic-themed heist film starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Isla Fisher earned an impressive CZK 3.25 million to come in third—only just below the Wicked debut—and bring its two-week tally to CZK 11.91 million.

Among other new releases, the Czech documentary Řepka: Hříšník, which follows controversial Czech football (soccer) player Tomáš Řepka, came in seventh with CZK 625,000. Benjamin Bat, a Dutch animated film screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version, opened in 18th with CZK 203,000.

The English-language Finnish action movie Sisu: Road to Revenge cracked the top 10 during its opening weekend with CZK 462,000, while Osgood Perkins‘ horror film Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, landed just behind it with CZK 426,000.

The Running Man ran out of Czech cinemas in its second weekend of release, falling a precipitous 72 percent to come in 14th with CZK 354,000, bringing its two-week tally to just CZK 2.01 million and signaling the film will not crack the top 20 next weekend.

Showing much better legs is Predator: Badlands, which fell 58 percent but still earned CZK 1.56 million to come in fourth in its third week of release, bringing its total to CZK 13.52 million. The Norwegian-produced family film A Mouse Hunt for Christmas, screening locally in a Czech dub, earned CZK 1.31 million to round out the top five and bring its three-week total to CZK 6.10 million.
