One of Prague’s major thoroughfares has been shut down from today through July 6 for production on The Gray Man, a $200 million Netflix blockbuster starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling that will be shooting in the Czech capital through July 20.
Dukelských hrdinů, a large street that runs through the middle of Prague 7 into the city center, is currently blocked off to all traffic for about six blocks from Strossmayerovo náměstí to the Výstaviště exhibition grounds. Portions of side streets are also closed off for production on The Gray Man.
Residents are allowed to enter and leave the area, but will be asked to wait for about five minutes during the live filming of any scenes; golf carts will be used to help transport any residents who require assistance. Tram traffic has been suspended in the area, and cars diverted.
The scene will be one of the central action sequences in The Gray Man, which features a rogue CIA agent (played by Gosling) on the run from his former employers, led by Evans’ character. Both stars are reportedly in Prague, while co-stars Billy Bob Thornton and Ana de Armas have also been spotted on the streets of the Czech capital.
Residents of Prague 7, especially in the area of Dukelských hrdinů and surroundings, have been advised to expect to hear explosions, gunfire, and the sounds of car chases and crashes over the next few days through July 6. The action on The Gray Man will only take place during daytime hours, between 9:30 and 19:00.
The action scene has been scheduled at an appropriate time for Prague residents; July 5 (Saints Cyril and Methodius Day) and 6 (Jan Hus Day) are national holidays in the Czech Republic, and many typically leave the city for summer vacation over these dates.
Unlike many other movies that use Prague to stand in for other locations or time periods, The Gray Man will be partially set in the Czech capital. Prague will also play Vienna, Baku, and Bangkok for the production.
The Gray Man is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously made Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The film has been adapted from the novel by Mark Greaney, in which Prague also played a key location.
Filming for The Gray Man previously took place on Prague’s Vítkov National Monument, and future scenes will be shot in the city center at locations including Jan Palach Square in front of the Rudolfinum, Pařížská, and Náměstí Republiky.
Outdoor locations in Prague 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 will all be utilized during the production of The Gray Man. Check back for updates on future shooting locales.
