Ricky Gervais praises Prague during Mortality tour: ‘The most beautiful capital city in the world’

British comedian, actor, and writer Ricky Gervais said Prague “might be the most beautiful capital city in the world” during his visit to the Czech capital this weekend. Gervais performed the Czech stop on his global Mortality tour at O2 Arena on Saturday, Oct. 4, drawing thousands of fans for his latest stand-up special.

The performer, known for creating The Office, Extras, and After Life, shared the comment on social media along with photos of the city, highlighting Prague’s enduring beauty. His brief but enthusiastic endorsement adds to a long list of celebrities who have publicly admired the Czech capital’s allure.

Mortality tour brings Gervais to Prague

Gervais’ stop in Prague was part of an extensive European leg of his Mortality tour. Following the success of his previous Netflix specials Humanity, SuperNature, and Armageddon, Mortality continues his exploration of life’s absurdities and the inevitability of death, combining sharp humor with reflective commentary.

Gervais’ show at O2 Arena followed months of work-in-progress performances that he describes as testing the boundaries of comedy and mortality. A portion of ticket proceeds from the show supported charity, continuing a tradition from his record-breaking Armageddon tour in 2023.

In the show, Gervais addressed universal topics with a blend of dark humor and empathy. “We’re all gonna die. May as well have a laugh about it,” he said, summarizing the theme of Mortality. The comedian has noted in previous interviews that his work balances provocative subject matter with crafted, deliberate comedic timing, a hallmark of his career since The Office launched him to international fame.

Prague’s growing celebrity appeal

Prague’s beauty has been previously recognized by other celebrities. The city has long been a hub for international film production, drawing both actors and crews with its diverse architecture, historic streets, and versatile studio facilities. For many visiting artists, the city’s cultural richness provides creative inspiration.

Orlando Bloom previously described the city as “a wonderful city filled with amazing people,” citing his time living and working in Prague during the production of Carnival Row. The actor has maintained his connection to the city since moving on, and serves as the brand ambassador for Prague-based Staropramen Brewery.

Hollywood star Uma Thurman similarly praised Prague after attending the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, calling it “the most beautiful city” while sharing photos of the Vltava River and Charles Bridge.

“I love Prague,” said actor Bill Skarsgård when returning to the Czech capital earlier this year to promote Locked. Skarsgård spent several years filming in Prague, including projects like The Crow and Robert EggersNosferatu, and described the city as a location he eagerly returns to.

Skarsgård’s The Crow co-star FKA Twigs also gave praise to the Czech capital. “[Prague] is stunning,” she told Rupal when promoting the movie on The Tonight Show. “It’s a really amazing Gothic city. Lots of beautiful architecture and an amazing underground of techno music and warehouses.”

Gervais’ recent praise, while delivered casually on social media, reinforces the perception of Prague as a global cultural and creative hub. For the city, whose historic streets have long drawn attention, endorsements from figures of Gervais’ stature add to its growing reputation among the international entertainment community.
