Director Robert Eggers‘ Nosferatu has officially wrapped filming in the Czech Republic. The new film, which stars Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicolas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe, quietly wrapped filming in Prague on May 19 after a three month shoot.
Local crew wrote that they considered the production a complex and unconventional shoot, but one that they were proud to be part of. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, who lives in Prague, confirmed that the film had been shot in color, with a look reminiscent of 19th century Romanticism.
Nosferatu filmed at Prague’s Barrandov Studio alongside locations in the Czech capital and around the country. Production briefly took place at Prague’s historic Invalidovna complex, a Baroque 18th century complex that served as a military hospital for two centuries. The castle in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem was also utilized for filming.
Producer Focus Features bills Eggers’ new take on Nosferatu as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.”
Nosferatu stars Skarsgård as the featured vampire, Count Orlok, and Depp as the object of his affections. Hoult plays Orlok’s real estate agent and the husband of Depp’s character. The cast also features Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney in unspecified roles.
Nosferatu first came to life as a 1922 German expressionist horror film unofficially based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which was directed by F.W. Murnau and starred Max Schreck as Count Orlok. The plot hewed so closely to Dracula that Stoker’s estate sued the filmmakers and the film was nearly lost to time.
Dafoe previously played Schreck in 2000’s fictional behind-the-scenes biopic Shadow of the Vampire, which also starred John Malkovich as Murnau. His role in Eggers’ Nosferatu has not been confirmed, but he could be playing the film’s version of Dracula‘s vampire hunter Van Helsing.
Nosferatu is the first of two major vampire projects shooting in Prague this year, with production on the second season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire, based on Anne Rice novel, currently underway in the center of the Czech capital.

Will the movie be released in black and white or color?
Can’t wait till this comes out next Christmas. Glad they filmed it on real locations in Europe like the earlier two movies.
