Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Czech box office Oct. 2-5: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ re-release makes waves; ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’ holds lead

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie led the Czech box office for the second straight weekend, earning CZK 3.82 million with a modest 31 percent drop to bring its three-week total to CZK 11.16 million ($540,000). The big-screen adaptation of the popular Netflix series, which stars Gloria Estefan and Kristen Wiig alongside lead Laila Lockhart Kraner, is screening locally in a Czech-dubbed version.

Leading a light lineup of new releases this weekend was the re-release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which scooped up CZK 1.76 million to come in fourth. Screening in IMAX and other premium formats in advance of the release of Avatar: Fire & Ash in December, the modest sum helped push the 2022 film’s lifetime gross to over CZK 300 million ($14.5 million), adding to its impressive tally as the highest-grossing film of all time at the Czech box office.

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s One Battle After Another also held strong with a 37 percent drop in its second weekend, taking in CZK 2.47 million in second place to bring its two-week total to CZK 8.33 million ($400,000). Strong reviews and word-of-mouth could see the Leonardo DiCaprio thriller linger into the awards season, where it should pick up even more steam.

The Conjuring: Last Rites continues to impress at the Czech box office, coming in third this weekend with CZK 1.92 million to pad a hefty five-week cume of CZK 43.41 million ($2.09 million). There hasn’t been a high-profile horror release to challenge it, and if it can hold off The Black Phone 2 on Oct. 16, it should continue to draw crowds through Halloween.

The Czech horror film Snare of Evil—a rare genre for local filmmakers—earned an impressive CZK 935,000 in its debut weekend to come in seventh. In its second weekend of release, the Czech-German-Polish Kafka biopic Franz took a 52 percent drop to come in fifth with CZK 1.38 million.

This weekend’s biggest release, meanwhile, was an even bigger flop at the Czech box office than it was in the U.S. two weekends ago. The Colin FarrellMargot Robbie fantasy romance A Big Bold Beautiful Journey failed to live up to its title, debuting outside the top 10 locally with a meager CZK 494,000.
