Zootopia 2 racked up an impressive CZK 21.6 million ($1.04 million) in its debut weekend in Czech cinemas, a total that rises to CZK 23.4 million ($1.13 million) including preview screenings. It’s the third best opening this year at the Czech box office behind A Minecraft Movie (CZK 42.5 million) and Vyšehrad Dvje (CZK 39.8 million)—but not quite as impressive as the Disney sequel’s take at the global box office, where it secured the fourth-biggest opening weekend of all time at $556 million (CZK 11.5 billion).
That was good enough to dominate the rest of the competition, which included an impressive debut from the Czech romantic comedy Na horách, opening in second with CZK 5.5 million. Set in Czechia’s Krkonoše Mountains, the film stars Aneta Krejčíková as the city girl who inherits a cabin in the mountains and Igor Orozovič as the rescue service operator who currently inhabits it.
The feel-good Czech sports drama Invincibles (Neporazitelní) came in third in its second weekend of release, earning 1.75 million to bring its two-week total to CZK 7.74 million. The film follows Czechia’s para ice hockey team leading up to the 2019 World Championships in Ostrava.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution opened in fourth with CZK 1.69 million. The Japanese animated compilation film is the third this fall to see big business at the Czech box office, though its debut falls short of the totals brought in by entries in the Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man franchises.
Among other new releases, the Czech fairy tale Alchemist Academy (Zrození alchymistky) came in sixth with CZK 1.48 million. The family film from filmmakers Petr Kubík and Lukáš Daniel Pařík (Princess Cursed in Time) follows a young orphan who enters a magical school for alchemists (that sounds familiar…).
Park Chan-wook‘s excellent black comedy No Other Choice cracked the top 10 in its first full week of release, earning CZK 358,000 to bring its total (including previews) to CZK 883,000. The film is playing in Czech cinemas a full month ahead of its debut in the U.S., where it will debut on Dec. 25 in an awards-qualifying run ahead of next year’s Oscars.
Hollywood romantic comedy Eternity, meanwhile, flopped at the Czech box office over the weekend, earning CZK 227,000 to come in 11th. The heaven-set romance starring Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner failed to make even half of what noted bomb A Big Bold Beautiful Journey brought in during its opening weekend back in October.
