Czech box office, March 12-15: Czech comedy ‘Birthday Wishes 2’ can’t leap over Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’

In an especially strong weekend at the Czech box office, last weekend’s champ Hoppers actually earned more than in its debut, according to the latest data from the Czech Film Distributors Union. The Pixar animated comedy saw a 13.8 percent boost in ticket sales to take in CZK 4.06 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its total haul to CZK 9.18 million.

Hoppers is primarily screening in a Czech-dubbed version in local cinemas, but original English-language showings can be found at select cinemas in Prague including Cinema City Slovanský dům and CineStar Anděl.

The Czech comedy Birthday Wishes 2 (Přání k narozeninám: Křtiny), a sequel to the 2023 film Birthday Wishes, proved strong competition, debuting in second with CZK 2.97 million. The film stars Eva Holubová and Jaroslav Dušek as new grandparents who insert themselves into their family’s lives.

Project Hail Mary, which only officially debuts later this week, managed an impressive CZK 2.17 million in limited preview screenings over the weekend, good enough to come in third in the local charts. The tally—backed by especially strong reviews—bodes well for its performance this upcoming weekend, where the Ryan Gosling space drama should surge into the top position.

Slasher sequel Scream 7 fell to fourth in the Czech charts, though the Kevin Williamson-directed film still took in CZK 1.84 million after a light 23.5 percent drop. The Neve Campbell-starring horror movie has earned CZK 8.37 million locally, and is officially the most successful Scream film both at the Czech box office and worldwide.

Zootopia 2 also continues to hold strong after 16 weeks of release. The animated Disney comedy finished fifth over the past weekend, surging past Wuthering Heights with a 12.5 percent boost to earn CZK 1.37 million and bring its total earnings to a massive CZK 165.7 million.

Among other new releases, the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him opened to a light CZK 995,000 to land in at seventh in this weekend’s charts. The romantic drama stars Maika Monroe as a young mother who seeks to reconnect with her daughter after being released from prison, and falls in love along the way.

Gore Verbinski‘s excellent Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die was DOA at the Czech box office, opening in local cinemas a month after its U.S. debut with a paltry CZK 219,000 to come in 18th. The Sam Rockwell-starring time travel comedy should eventually become a cult hit, but most audiences will need to catch it on streaming.
