Can’t make it to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this year? Didn’t get a chance to see all the films you wanted? You’re in luck: some of the best films from this year’s Karlovy Vary film fest will be hitting cinemas in Prague as soon as the festival finishes during the KVIFF Echoes (Šary Vary) film festival from July 10-16.
KVIFF Echoes will bring hits from this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to Prague cinemas Kino Světozor, Kino Aero, and Kino Přítomnost all week long after festival wraps up in Karlovy Vary on July 8. A selection of films will also screen under the stars at Brno’s new summer cinema Filda, operated by Kino Scala on the campus of Masaryk University during the same timeframe.
Many, but not all, of the films screened during the KVIFF Echoes festival will be presented in English-friendly versions, in their original language with English subtitles when necessary, giving expats in Prague a chance to enjoy the features. Check the KVIFF Echoes program to confirm which films will be screened in English-friendly versions.
“Visitors to our cinemas are used to us regularly bringing them a selection of the best after the festival in Karlovy Vary,” says KVIFF Echoes‘ Anna Lísalová in a press release. “We’re continuing that this year and we’ve picked some really cool titles that we’re looking forward to ourselves.”
The winning film from this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which will be awarded during the festival’s closing ceremony on July 8, will kick off the KVIFF Echoes festival on Monday, July 10 at Kino Světozor. As the competing films at the Karlovy Vary festival are having their world premieres, the screening in Prague during will be just the second time the film will be publicly exhibited. The winning film is traditionally screened in an English-friendly version.
Other films screening in English-friendly versions at the KVIFF Echoes festival include On the Adamant, which is screening as part of Documentary Monday at Kino Světozor on July 10. Nicolas Philibert’s documentary about care workers on a unique floating daycare center won the top prize at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, beating out top-rated competition such as Past Lives, which will also be screening during KVIFF Echoes.
One of the most prominent films screening at both the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and KVIFF Echoes will be director Justine Triet’s courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall (pictured at top), which won the Palme D’Or at last month’s Cannes Film Festival.
The KVIFF Echoes festival will also feature a number of other films that played in competition at Cannes, including Monster from director Hirokazu Kore-eda (whose Shoplifters won the Palme D’Or in 2018), Fallen Leaves from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, and Jessica Hausner’s Club Zero, which drew Cannes walkouts for its graphic portrayal of eating disorders.
One of the Karlovy Vary festival’s special guests will also be represented at KVIFF Echoes, as Ewan McGregor‘s latest film You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, a road movie in which he stars alongside his daughter, will also be screened in Prague at Kino Světozor.
Czech films will also be well represented at this year’s KVIFF Echoes festival, with Matěj Chlupáček’s period drama We Have Never Been Modern (screening in competition in Karlovy Vary) and Albert Hospodářský’s climate change parable Brutal Heat both screening with English subtitles.
Tickets to KVIFF Echoes can be purchased online at the websites of participating cinemas, and run the price of a standard ticket: 175 crowns at Kino Světozor, 170 crowns at Kino Aero, and 210 crowns at the luxurious Kino Přítomnost.
