‘Suburban Screams’: John Carpenter remotely directed a Prague-shot TV series

Legendary horror director John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) recently appeared at the Texas Frightmare Weekend in Irving, Texas this past weekend, and dropped some tantalizing details about his latest work. Among the news was that he remotely directed a TV series shot in Prague from his home in Hollywood.

“I just finished directing, remotely, a TV series called Suburban ScreamsJohn Carpenter’s Suburban Screams,” Carpenter told the audience at his Texas Frightmare Weekend Q&A panel.

“It was filmed in Prague, and I sat on my couch and directed it. It was awesome.”

Carpenter’s statements are the first official confirmation that Suburban Screams exists. The project would be his first directing work since the 2010 film The Ward, though he has kept busy in Hollywood, and recently composed the score for David Gordon Green‘s Halloween trilogy alongside his son Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.

Almost no information about Suburban Screams is publicly available, but the project was officially registered with the Czech Film Fund when submissions re-opened this March. It was submitted by Milk and Honey Pictures.

Milk and Honey Pictures are handling the Prague production of Foundation for Apple TV and Skydance, and their recent credits also include the Netflix horror series Haunted.

Carpenter’s brief quotes suggest that Suburban Screams has already been filmed. It would have likely been shot at the spacious Prague Studios in Letňany, which is co-owned by Milk & Honey Pictures and has also served as a production studio for Foundation and Haunted.

(8/6 Update: I’ve learned from those involved with the production that Suburban Screams was not shot at Prague Studios, but instead entirely filmed on location.)

During the Texas Frightmare panel, Carpenter also revealed that he’s working on another Lost Themes album. 2015’s Lost Themes was Carpenter’s debut studio album, and he has subsequently released two more, each of which can be purchased through label Sacred Bones Records.

Carpenter also teased that a sequel to his classic The Thing might be in the works, something that he has hinted at throughout the years.
