The highly-anticipated release of The Gray Man on Netflix is now two months away, and the first official trailer for the spy thriller has just dropped following about 15 seconds of footage glimpsed in a 2022 Netflix promo reel in January.
The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry, a CIA-sanctioned assassin who is betrayed by the agency he works for and hunted down across the globe by a team of agents led by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans).
Along the way, Gosling’s character teams up with a sympathetic agent played by Ana de Armas. The impressive cast for The Gray Man also features Dhanush, Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, and Regé-Jean Page.
The Gray Man was partially filmed in Prague last summer for about a month during a high-profile shoot that involved the participation of thousands of locals both in front of and behind the camera.
During one of the The Gray Man’s most prominent action scenes, teased in the trailer, Gosling’s character rides a Prague tram while being chased by agents with heavy firepower.
Sequences for this scene were shot in Prague 7’s Holešovice district and across the Čechův most bridge before ending up in the city center at Náměstí Republiky. By the time the tram reached Prague’s Municipal House, it was nearly completely destroyed.
Another extended action sequence for The Gray Man was shot in the city center at Jan Palach Square, across from the city’s Rudolfinum concert hall.
A large-scale fountain set was created just for the film at the Square, for a scene in which Gosling’s character escapes arrest from Prague police and extended gunfire from incoming agents.
The set was so impressive, with a working fountain, that some locals even called for the city to keep it after filming wrapped. Ultimately, however, it was destroyed.
Scenes for The Gray Man were also shot at Futurama Business Park in Karlín, which stood in for Bangkok (!), the towering National Monument at Vítkov, and other locations across the city.
At an estimated budget of $200 million, The Gray Man is Netflix’s biggest production to date. While much of the film was shot in a Los Angeles studio, the action scenes that highlight the movie were filmed on location in Prague.
The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously made Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. The screenplay is credited to Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely, from the original novel by Mark Greaney.
The Gray Man is slated for a limited theatrical release on July 15 in the United States prior to premiering on Netflix on July 22.
A release in Prague cinemas isn’t currently planned, but getting the chance to see some of the most explosive action ever shot in Prague on the big screen would certainly be appreciated.
Ahead of the release of the trailer for The Gray Man, Netflix also released three posters featuring characters played by Gosling, Evans, and de Armas:
