After nearly two years, Prague production on the second season of Amazon’s Carnival Row has wrapped. The series’ official Twitter account celebrated the final day of production on September 16 with some behind-the-scenes photos.
The first season of Carnival Row premiered in August 2019, production on the second season began that November. But filming was postponed in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, only five out of eight episodes had been shot.
Production on the final three episodes of Carnival Row’s second season fully resumed more than a year later in May 2021 before wrapping four months later.

Carnival Row stars Orlando Bloom as Rycroft ‘Philo’ Philostrate, a human detective investigating a dark conspiracy in a steampunk fantasy city inhabited by fairy tale creatures. Cara Delevingne plays Vignette Stonemoss, a fae (fairy) and Philo’s former lover who aids him in the investigation.
The two stars have spent much of the past three years in Prague during production on the first and second season of Carnival Row. Bloom bid farewell to his character with a lengthy Instagram post in which he shorns Philo’s trademark beard.
“I’m always grateful for the chance to evolve and grow and learn from my characters and all the wonderful people as actors, get to interact with along the way,” Bloom wrote. “The crew who work tirelessly and all the cast and supporting cast who’ve stood out in all kinds of weather to make some very large filmic moments come to life.”
Others also bid an emotional farewell to Carnival Row’s second season after the lengthy shoot.
“This shoot represents an unforgettable time in my life for me,” tweeted series director Thor Freudenthal. “Working with immeasurable talent on both sides of the camera.”
Prague plays the titular city in Carnival Row, with the city’s skyline recognizable under some steampunk CGI during establishing shots in the first season.
In the Czech capital, production on the series primarily took place at Barrandov Studios, with scenes also shot on location around Prague. Parts of the final three episodes were filmed at two local marketplaces, Pražská tržnice (Prague Market) in Holešovice and Ovocný trh (Fruit Market) in the city center.
Carnival Row’s second season also filmed on locations across the Czech Republic, including Liberec, Hradčanská, Nelahozeves, Toušeň, Doksany, and Sychrov.
Carnival Row has been the most lucrative international project to ever film in the Czech Republic, spending over three billion crowns ($140 million) before filming resumed on the second season in May.
A premiere date for season two of Carnival Row on Amazon Prime has yet to be announced, but will likely come during 2022.
