Hollywood star Johnny Depp is coming to the 2021 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, organizers announced today. The 55th edition of the film festival begins next Friday, August 20, and runs through the following weekend.
“We’re incredibly honored to welcome to the Festival an icon of contemporary cinema,” Karlovy Vary International Film Festival executive director Krystof Mucha and festival artistic director Karel Och stated in a press release.
“We’ve admired Mr. Depp for such a long time and are thrilled to bestow this honor on him.”
Depp will present two recent films at this year’s Karlovy Vary film fest: Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, a documentary about the Irish singer-songwriter that Depp produced, and Minamata, a new dramatic feature based on a true story in which the star plays an American photographer documenting mercury poisoning in 1970s Japan.
After attending the Karlovy Vary film fest next week, Depp will also be awarded at the San Sebastián International Film Festival at the end of September, where he will receive a lifetime achievement award.
Throughout his career, Depp has received three Best Actor Academy Award nominations, for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Depp has been nominated for nine Golden Globes, winning for Sweeney Todd.
The Karlovy Vary fest will “recognize and pay tribute to the acclaimed actor’s extensive career and lasting legacy on the film industry globally,” according to a press release, but Depp apparently won’t be the recipient of one of the festival’s two big awards handed out annually.
Ethan Hawke will receive the Festival President’s Award at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, while Michael Caine will receive the festival’s prestigious Crystal Globe, organizers announced today.
Caine will be awarded at the opening ceremony of this year’s Karlovy Vary film fest on August 20, and Hawke will be honored during the closing ceremony on August 28.
It was not announced when Depp would attend, but both Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan and Minimata screen during the closing weekend, making it likely the star will be around during the tail end of the festival.
Depp was previously in Prague in 2018, where his band The Hollywood Vampires opened for Ozzy Osbourne at the Prague Rocks festival.
