2018 Guide to Summer Cinema in Prague

It’s the first week of June in 2018, and more than a handful of open-air cinemas are already screening weekly movies under the stars in Prague – – with a few big additions starting to debut films later this month.

Years ago, Prague’s lone open-air summer cinema was a popular outdoor venue at Střelecký ostrov. Since its closure about a decade back, more than a dozen other outdoor cinemas have cropped up in central Prague to take its place, with new venues every year – – making summer cinema one of the city’s hottest new traditions.

In 2018, summer cinemas like Výletní kino Smíchov and Nákladové nádraží Žižkov will not be operating due to renovations at their locations, and are likely closed permanently. And the National Gallery’s summer cinema at the rooftop of Veletržní palác is also currently out of commission due to reconstruction on the premises.

But a few new summer cinemas have popped up in Prague to take their place, including a new location near Prague Castle run by the city of Prague 6, a new Containall location in Stromovka, and a National Gallery-run cinema in the beautiful central Prague gardens of the St. Agnes Convent.

Also, the Bio Oko-run summer cinema that debuted in front of the Výstaviště exhibition grounds has been relocated this year to the Křižíkova fontána on the other side of the area.
