Film Music Festival Soundtrack Poděbrady Kicks off this Weekend

The Czech Republic is home to a number of music and film festivals throughout the summer months, but a new addition to the festival calendar promises to be a one-of-kind event.

This weekend will see the second annual edition of the Soundtrack Poděbrady Festival, a new four-day fest that will combine music, film, and other new media in a one-of-a-kind experience at the renowned Czech spa town, just a short train ride (roughly an hour) east of Prague.

The festivities will kick off this Thursday at Poděbrady’s central park spa promenade, where Lucie, one of the most famous Czech bands from the past 30 years, will give their only live concert of the year. The performance will focus on the band's songs that have been used in popular Czech films and TV shows.

Friday’s highlights include a performance from acclaimed Czech composer (and longtime Zdeněk Svěrák collaborator) Jaroslav Uhlíř, who has scored classic films like Ať žijí duchové, Trhák, Vrchní prchni, S čerty nejsou žerty, and Tři veteráni.

One of the biggest highlights at this year’s festival will be Italian composer Nicola Piovani, who won an Oscar for his work on the 1997 feature Life is Beautiful. Piovani has also worked with directors such as Federico Fellini (Fred and Ginger), Nanno Moretti (The Son's Room) and Paolo & Vittorio Taviani (Good Morning Babylon) over an illustrious career.

For lovers of Czech fairy tales, Christmastime will be recreated during a screening of the classic Tři oříšky pro Popelku (Three Nuts for Cinderella) with a live rendition of Karel Svoboda’s famed score performed by the Prague Symphony Ensemble (PSE).

On Saturday night, the fest will climax with a medley of music from popular HBO TV shows, with a focus on Game of Thrones but also including themes from True Blood, Sex and the City, Vinyl, True Detective, Big Little Lies, and others.

Conductors Krištof Marek and Jan Valta will host the finale, which will also feature singer Vladivojna La Chia and the Prague Symphonic Ensemble. Accompanying the presentation will be a videomapping show on the Poděbrady Castle.

Accompanying events throughout the festival will include an outdoor summer cinema (screening recent films like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and T2 Trainspotting), photo booths, props and costumes from movies, and more.
