4 Prague Cinemas to Screen Lord of the Rings Marathons in January

2017 marked the 80th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien’s first Hobbit book, which was released on September 21, 2017.

And to celebrate, four Prague cinemas will ring in the new year with all-day (and night) screenings of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies during the month of January.

Kino Lucerna, which recently ran a two-day marathon of the Harry Potter films, will be screening extended editions of both The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogies over the weekend of January 6-7.

The marathon at Kino Lucerna kicks off at 9:00 in the morning on Saturday with the extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Given the 572-minute (nearly 9-hour) runtime of the extended editions in the trilogy and a breather in-between the films, the day should wrap up at around 20:00.

The following day will begin with extended editions of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy from 9:00, which total 682 minutes (11+ hours) and should run till about 22:00.

Tickets to the two-day marathon at Kino Lucerna go for 600 CZK.

But Lucerna won’t be the only Prague cinema to screen a LOTR marathon in January: Kino Světozor, Kino Aero, and Bio Oko will also be playing extended editions of the original trilogy, albeit minus the Hobbit prequels.

At Světozor, the one-day marathon will take place on Saturday, January 6 at 11:00, followed the next week by an LOTR Marathon at Aero (Saturday, January 13 from 12:00).

At Bio Oko, the extended editions of the original Lord of the Rings films will be projected on Friday, January 26 from 18:00. Get cozy for this one: given the 11+ hour runtime of the trilogy, that means this marathon will last until around six in the morning.

Tickets run 360 CZK for the marathon at Kino Aero and Bio Oko and 390 CZK at Kino Světozor; tickets to individual films cannot be purchased separately.

All all cinemas, the movies will be screened in English with Czech subtitles, but on February 23 Bio Oko will present a marathon of the films in their Czech-dubbed versions.
